A precise-looking manicure is not proof of a safe process. The condition of your nails and surrounding skin, the products used, and how the appointment is performed all matter. This guide is general information, not a medical assessment or a guarantee that any technique suits everyone.
Protect the skin around the nail
Cuticles are protective tissue. The AAD recommends avoiding cutting or forcefully pushing them back. Ask for conservative preparation and discuss your comfort with the technician; clean-looking edges do not justify injury. Stop the service if you experience pain or burning.
Ask about the tools and the setup
Before the appointment, ask how reusable instruments are prepared between clients and which items are single-use. Ask to see the artist's applicable license if you want to verify it. A photograph, a sealed-looking pouch, or the word 'sterile' alone does not explain a salon's complete process.
Tell the salon about previous product reactions
The FDA notes that nail products can cause allergic reactions. Give the salon the product name if you have reacted before, and speak with a healthcare professional about a suspected allergy. Do not treat a different marketing label as proof that another gel will be suitable.
When to postpone cosmetic work
If a nail or the surrounding skin is painful, swollen, injured, or showing an unexplained change, seek appropriate medical advice before covering it with product. A salon visit is not a substitute for diagnosis. You can contact RM about rescheduling or choosing a non-product appointment after receiving advice.
Make the consultation useful
